Spaceballs: The Animated Series TrailerG4 Brings Animated Adaptation of Classic Mel Brooks FilmSep 15, 2008 Dominic von Riedemann
Check out the 5th Sign of the Apocalypse: the trailer for Spaceballs: The Animated Series, starring Mel Brooks and Daphne Zuniga.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Spaceballs: The Animated Series. It even has a trailer, which you can check out on Movieweb. And that's where the excitement ends. Spaceballs is, of course, the 1987 Mel Brooks movie that parodied a whole slew sci-fi flicks, especially George Lucas' gajillion selling Star Wars series. Okay, so it wasn't on the same level of genius as Brooks' 1974 masterworks, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, but there were some great sequences and the actors were clearly having fun with their roles. And who can forget the sequence when Col. Sandurz (George Wyner) catches Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) playing with his action figures? So, if Mel couldn't rustle up the old cast to make Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2 (obviously John Candy is unavailable, due to the unfortunate fact that he's an ex-parrot), then perhaps an animated series would satisfy die-hard Brooks fans like yours truly. Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) and Brooks (President Skroob/Yogurt) are reprising their roles, while Dee Bradley Baker takes over for Dark Helmet, Tino Insana subs on Barfolomew ("I'm a mog: half-man, half-dog. I'm my own best friend.") and Rino Romano takes on Lone Star. At this point, it's not clear whether Joan Rivers, or her character Dot Matrix, will make an appearance. Spaceballs: The Animated Series Trailer Brings the Suck Unfortunately, this trailer features none of Brooks' sparkling wit, or spoofs of random movies (who can forget John Hurt's immortal line: "Oh, no . . . not again!"?). So when will then be now – ahem – what do eager trailer watchers get instead? Boobies. Lots and lots of boobies. Big ones, small ones, round ones, sagging ones . . . yeah, you get the idea. And that's it. Yes, countless classic comedies have used many actress' best features to great effect (including A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and, of course, Spaceballs) but when it's the only thing a prospective comedy has to offer . . . methinks Mr. Brooks' and Thomas Meehan's well o' inspiration is running dry. And that's a shame because this could have been so much better than just a lame excuse to feature to feature animated mammary glands. Oops, let's not forget that penis-shaped space ship. Because those are always good for a laugh, right? Right? Right? <crickets> Spaceballs: The Animated Series is coming to G4 on September 21st at 5 pm. Fun Fact: "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb." - Dark Helmet. Sigh; freaking classic.
